General Manager, Japan

As LinkedIn’s presence in Japan continued to grow, the company set out to appoint its first dedicated Country Manager to guide the market’s long-term development. We partnered with LinkedIn to identify a leader who could align global priorities with local opportunity.

Partnering with LinkedIn to hire its first dedicated Country Manager for Japan was a highly rewarding and strategically important engagement. The placement proved meaningful not only because of the successful outcome, but also because of the long-term impact it had on LinkedIn’s business in the region.

Challenges

Outcomes

Establishing Dedicated Local Leadership: LinkedIn was operating in Japan without a dedicated country leader to oversee the market.

Supporting Market Adoption: While the platform was growing, user adoption in Japan was developing more gradually than in other APAC markets.

Identifying the Right Leadership Profile: The search required a leader who could effectively connect LinkedIn’s global strategy with the nuances of the Japanese market.

Successful Country Manager Placement: LinkedIn appointed an experienced product leader to guide its Japan business.

Greater Alignment Across Stakeholders: The search helped clarify the role’s scope and align expectations among global leadership.

Strengthened Local Growth Strategy: The new leader helped shape a localized product and growth strategy for the Japanese market.

The Challenge

At the time of the search, LinkedIn had already established a presence in Japan and was experiencing steady growth. However, the market lacked a dedicated country leader responsible for driving the business holistically. Senior functional leaders were supporting operations, but no single executive was focused on leading and expanding the market locally.

While Japan represented an important strategic market, user adoption was developing more gradually compared to other regions in APAC. Previous search efforts had struggled to identify a leader who could effectively translate LinkedIn’s global vision into a locally relevant strategy. Internal hiring efforts had also yet to produce a candidate who met leadership’s expectations for the role.

We were engaged to complement LinkedIn’s existing search efforts and identify a leader capable of bridging global strategy with the realities of the Japanese market.

The Approach

Our work began by building strong alignment and trust with key stakeholders. We shared insights into Japan’s executive talent landscape, including how senior leaders in the market evaluate opportunities and what factors influence successful leadership transitions.

Leveraging our network and local market expertise, we demonstrated the ability to access and engage candidates who are often difficult to reach through traditional search methods. During the process, we reconnected with a highly regarded product leader whom LinkedIn had previously considered but had lost contact with. Through careful engagement and alignment with the role’s vision, this individual ultimately became the successful hire.

The Outcome

Through close collaboration with LinkedIn’s global stakeholders, we helped refine the scope of the role, navigate complex compensation considerations, and establish clear expectations for the position.

Following the appointment, the new Country Manager delivered meaningful impact by developing a localized product and growth strategy tailored to the Japanese market. The leadership provided greater strategic focus for the region and helped accelerate the trajectory of LinkedIn’s growth in Japan.
