General Manager, Japan

As the media landscape rapidly evolved with the rise of digital platforms, Discovery recognized the need for transformative leadership in one of its most important markets. We partnered with the company’s APAC leadership team to identify a visionary executive capable of guiding Discovery Japan into its next phase of growth and innovation.

Challenges

Navigating an Evolving Media Landscape: Discovery needed a leader to guide the business through the shift toward digital platforms.

Identifying Transformational Leadership: The role required an executive who could lead a large P&L while driving innovation and growth.

Positioning the Opportunity in a Competitive Talent Market: Attracting candidates required strengthening Discovery’s leadership narrative and market positioning.

Outcomes

Successful Regional Leadership Placement: A senior executive was hired to lead Japan and later expanded their role to Korea.

Greater Alignment Across Stakeholders: A follow-up search resulted in the placement of a dedicated Japan General Manager.

Long-Term Leadership Stability: Both leaders served for a combined eight years.

The Challenge

Discovery had established a strong presence in Japan through long-standing partnerships with leading terrestrial broadcasters. However, the media industry was undergoing rapid change as digital platforms and new content distribution models reshaped how audiences consumed media.

At this pivotal moment, Discovery sought a leader capable of guiding the Japan business through this evolving landscape. The role required an executive who could oversee an existing multimillion-dollar P&L while driving innovation, identifying new revenue opportunities, and positioning the company for long-term growth.

Attracting candidates with modern content and digital platform expertise also required repositioning Discovery’s story within a competitive talent market. Our challenge was to craft and communicate a compelling narrative that highlighted Discovery’s evolving strategy and the opportunity to lead the company’s transformation in Japan.

The Approach

We conducted a broad and targeted search across traditional media organizations, emerging content platforms, and innovation-focused technology companies. Our approach included comprehensive talent mapping, ongoing market insights, and close collaboration with Discovery’s leadership team throughout the search process.

During the engagement, we provided strategic advisory support on candidate positioning, market dynamics, and leadership expectations. This process ultimately led to the identification of a high-potential executive who strongly aligned with Discovery’s vision and strategic objectives.

We guided both the client and the selected candidate through a complex offer negotiation and transition process, resulting in a successful appointment.

The Outcome

What began as a search for a President of Japan ultimately evolved into a broader regional leadership opportunity. Shortly after joining, the selected executive’s responsibilities expanded to include oversight of South Korea, reflecting the confidence placed in their leadership.

Following this appointment, Discovery re-engaged us to lead a subsequent search for a dedicated General Manager for Japan. We successfully completed this second placement, establishing a complementary leadership structure to support the company’s continued growth.

Together, the two executives provided stability and leadership continuity, serving a combined tenure of eight years and helping guide Discovery through a dynamic period in the global media industry.
